Tax Credit Donations
Freedom Academy, Inc. is a not-for-profit Charter School. Considered by the State as a public school, Freedom Academy, Inc. can receive tax deductible donations in furtherance of providing public education. For enhanced program offerings and other not optional items which do not meet the Tax Credit criteria, the School will charge fees which will be published annually.
Arizona Revised Statutes (A.R.S.) §43-1089.01 allows taxpayers a credit for the amount of any fees or cash contributions made to a public school in the State for the support of extracurricular activities or character education programs. An Arizona Tax Credit Donation can be made by any legal resident of Arizona. Married couples may contribute up to $400 and individuals up to $200 annually.
Extracurricular activities are defined in A.R.S. §15-342(24) as optional, noncredit, educational, or recreational activities which supplement the education program of the school, whether offered before, during, or after regular school hours. Extracurricular activities that are eligible for the tax credit are those school-sponsored activities that require enrolled students to pay a fee in order to participate, including fees for band uniforms, equipment or uniforms for varsity athletic activities, scientific laboratory materials, and in-state or out-of-state trips that are solely for competitive events. However, trips or events that are recreational, amusement, or tourist activities are specifically excluded from eligibility for the tax credit. Character education programs, as described in A.R.S. §15- 719, include instructing students in the definition and application of at least six of the following character traits: truthfulness, responsibility, compassion, diligence, sincerity, trustworthiness, respect, attentiveness, obedience, orderliness, forgiveness, virtue, fairness, caring, citizenship, and integrity. Based on both the law and the type of programming we currently offer, the following categories meet the criteria for tax credit donations:
- Extracurricular Programs
- Field Trips (Non-Amusement but education based) Education based after school programs
- School athletic participation
- Scientific laboratory materials
Tax credit donations may be restricted but the school encourages that donations be unrestricted to enable the school the greatest flexibility in continuing to provide the most enhanced and robust program to our students. Given the limited scope of how the monies may be utilized, too many restricted donations may preclude our ability to ensure the broadest programming we can provide.
The following items are currently considered fees which are not tax credit deductible:
- School Shirts/ Sweatshirts and/or extra sets of books
